Castles in the Sky
Mattress Factory Museum – Gestures – Pittsburgh
Powdered coated and uncoated aluminum mesh, monofilament, wire, grommets, rubber
2009
Inspired by a quote by Henry David Thoreau, “…if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary… If you have built castles in the air, your works need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them.” The installation was created by the hand manipulation of flat sheets of aluminum mesh. The black forms were created by a hand pleating technique. – the uncoated aluminum, “curtain” by the use of a simple wooden tool.
